Teaching Philosophy

I supervise and teach a critical thinking course that I designed with an emphasis on introspection and project based learning. This approach encourages innovation by challenging assumptions and tapping into the diverse experiences of the group. The practical nature of this approach makes it very flexible and can be applied to common decisions, reoccurring problems, creative projects, systemic dysfunctions, and interpersonal problems.

My Background

I had a nontraditional college experience.  I was an awful student in high school yet I managed to get into the California Maritime Academy (CSUM) and thought I was going to be an engineer. I wasn't. After dropping out I discovered a love of Philosophy in a Critical Thinking class at SF City College. I received both a BA and MA in Philosophy from SFSU where I also taught for 2 years. My thesis developed an account of meekness and defended it as a feminist virtue for liberation. My current research is focused on the attitude of playfulness, particularly in the contexts of education and sex.

Outside the Classroom

We have lived in the Mission District of San Francisco since 2009.  We love our neighborhood.  We especially love the buzz of the City when the Giants are winning, we can even tolerate the fires on our street. My wife and I try our best to maintain a balanced life.  So far we have managed to afford an enjoyable life while still being able to stay at home with Ari and care for her.  When we’re all together we enjoy going to restaurants, going on walks, and trips to anywhere that is warm (especially if its a water park with a lazy river). I love sports, particularly golf.  I currently drive part time for Lyft. Before doing that I drove tour buses and gave tours of CA for 8 years.
